Tag Day was observed on this day in 1908, for a worthy cause.
Cardboard tags were sold for 10-cents, and were designed to be worn on one’s lapel or dress.
Sales from the tags were earmarked to be used for the fuel fund for the Twin City Hospital.
School children sold the tags, and they were on sale at other locations, such as drug stores. Individual sellers were in a competition to sell the most tags, seeking a reward.
The fair that was running at the same time made reaching downtown passersby more difficult. So, the contest was extended a day. Enterprising sellers took note, and went to the fair to attract more buyers.
The Twin City Hospital was located on Brookstown Avenue, and is shown in the above photo.
