Hine’s Shoe Store Efird L. Hine
Efird Levin Hine was born in Winston-Salem on this day in 1890. His parents were Gilbert C. and Carrie Efird Hine.
He was the proprietor of People’s Shoe Store that opened in the new Masten Building on Main Street in 1911. He changed the name of his business to Hine’s Shoe Store shortly afterwards. Around 1916 he moved his business to 211 West Fourth Street, where he remained for many years.
The photo above, on the left, shows the interior of his store on West Fourth Street, which kept mostly the same layout throughout the life of the store. In later years he also carried American Tourister luggage.
The business expanded to the Stratford Mini-Mall in 1975.
Hine was a charter member of the Kiwanis Club, Twin City Club and Forsyth Country Club. He passed away in 1975.
