March 9, 1919: Rondthaler Memorial Building Consecrated

Rondthaler Memorial

Ground was broken for the Rondthaler Memorial Sunday School  Building on South Church Street in 1912, and the first services were held there in 1913.   The bottom floor of the building was a large auditorium, and classrooms encircled the room.  The upper story consisted of classrooms that opened to a gallery that extended around the room.  It was located next to Home Moravian Church.

The building was named in honor of Bishop Edward Rondthaler who served the Salem Congregation for 53 years.

In 1913, the interior of Home Moravian Church underwent renovation.

On this date in 1919, the Rondthaler Memorial Building, and the renovated Home Moravian Church sanctuary, were consecrated.  The cost of both undertakings was $96,091.92.  Bishop Rondthaler was present when his namesake building opened in 1913, and when it was consecrated in 1919.
