Reverend William Fletcher Womble was born in Chatham County in 1859. His father, J. J. Womble, was killed during the Civil War.
As a young man, Womble worked in the merchantile business in Siler City, until 1892 when he decided to enter the ministry.
He preached for several Methodist circuits, such as Wentworth and Lincolnton, then was assigned to Shelby, Newton, Morganton, Reidsville, and Hendersonville where he served four years at each post.
In 1918 Womble was named presiding elder of the Mount Airy district, and after serving several years, he went to Greensboro and again to Newton. He retired in 1927 after serving the Western North Carolina Conference for 35 years, and moved to Winston-Salem to be near his only child, B. S. Womble.
Womble was married to Olivia Snipes Womble, and he passed away in 1929.
