On this date: January 18, 1938. The Salem College Library staff began the process of moving 18,000 books from the one-room, second story room in the Old Chapel to a new and completely equipped four-story building on the southeast corner of Salem Square, at Church and West Streets.
When the library needed more room, and Old Salem wished to reconstruct the Shober House at this location in 1972, the library was lifted from its foundation and rolled 90 feet south to its current location and enlarged.
