A report of the influenza situation appeared in the Winston-Salem Journal on this day in 1920. The report stated that the situation has not changed, and that there are increasing numbers of influenza and pneumonia cases in the city.
The influenza epidemic caused much sickness and death when it occurred in 1918, and people recalled the disruption in their lives and the distress when schools, churches, theatres, and any place where people congregate were closed until the epidemic had diminished.
The article also mentioned several women who were assisting at the hospital, in addition to the doctors and other medical personnel who were treating patients.
The photograph shows the Twin City Hospital, where the influenza patients were treated. This hospital was expanded over the years and was later referred to as City Hospital. The building still exists on E. Fourth Street.
