Wayback Wednesday: When Hanes Mall Was New

Do you remember Hanes Mall when it was new? The mall looked a little different in 1975. There were recessed floor areas and lots of seating around the stores for shoppers. The recessed areas were removed during one of the renovations. Kinney Shoes was an original tenant, with the photo above taken in August 1975.

This photo shows the interior of the store, with the “Grand Opening” signs hanging in the store.

In the photo above, store employees pose for a group photo.

Another original tenant was Anderson-Little, a clothing store that was located near the escalators.

Well-ordered clothing hung on racks in the men’s section.

Women’s clothing was in a separate, but nearby area, featuring the latest fashions.

In addition to shoe and clothing stores, Hanes Mall also had banks, a pet store, children’s clothing stores, jewelry stores, specialty stores, greeting card stores, and several restaurants, before the food court was built in a newer section of the mall.

NCNB had a branch location at the mall. The photo above was taken in February 1976, showing the bank employees.

This photo shows the bank’s interior and the bank employees.

Just for the sake of nostalgia, here are some of the other original tenants for Hanes Mall: Pearson Music, Cahill & Swain, Youth Center, Casual Corner, Sharpe’s Brides, Tinder Box, Osterman Jewelers, Merle Norman Cosmetics, Chess King, Andrew’s Music, Thom McAn Shoe Store, Walden Books, Joyce & Royal, Morrison’s Cafeteria, Spencer’s Gifts, Hickory Farms, Camelot Music, Hofheimer Shoes, G’Anzie, Foxmoor Casuals, Radio Shack, Read’s Uniform Center, Tiffany’s Bakery, Norman Stockton, Brooks Fashions, K&K Toys, Thalhimer’s, Belk, Sears, Aladdin’s Castle, Record Bar, Shoney’s, Orange Julius, Bailey Banks & Biddle, Zondervan Family Book Store, Cookie Factory, Florsheim Shoes, Rings N’ Things, Mother-To-Be, Just Pants, Hahn’s Shoes, Hanover Shoes, Zale’s Jewelers, Galeski Optical, Ollie’s Trolley, Wachovia Bank, Bressler’s Ice Cream Shop, Carolina Keyboards, B. Oh my gosh. Really shows my age when I say I remember Kinney Shoes. Who can forget World Bazaar? Use to be one of my favorites as a kid. So many neat little things for a girl to love.

This is awesome! I was 9 years old when it opened in 1975. Went there all the time until we moved in 1979. Returned for a visit in 2000 (or 01, can’t remember) to see the new wing and food court had been added (and the movie theater was gone!). To add to the original tenants list, IIRC there was a snack bar called Carousel (sold cheese hot dogs and stuff like that), across from Aladdin’s Castle.

I worked at Thalhimers, Belk, Westmoreland’s Craft Store and Contempo Casuals. I quit in 1989. I do remember going to Mr Dunderbox and getting a Reuben sandwich and their lasagna. In the mall we’re fountains everywhere in to throw your pennies in and make a wish.

I remember the Corn Dog Hut, or named something like that. The entire store front was shiny gold colored metallic sheeting. Sold great big delicious corn dogs and smelled so good.

The first photo of Kinney shows was taken from right in front of K&K Toys, where I worked for 3 years while in high school in the late 70’s. It was a great time to work at a mall!
