Betty Key, a student nurse at Baptist Hospital, posed for Winston-Salem Journal photographer, Jim Keith, for this St. Patrick’s Day photo. The photo appeared in the Winston-Salem Journal on March 17, 1962, page 10.
According to Betty, she is not Irish and has no Irish blood. But, this was before people had their DNA tested for genealogy purposes, so she might be more Irish than she thinks.
Betty is holding one of the hospital’s St. Patrick’s Day decorations. She is wearing a popular early-1960s piece of jewelry. Does anyone remember the circle pins, worn on blouse collars?
Also in the newspaper on this Saturday in 1962 was Beth Tartan’s column, “Speaking of Food.” The featured recipes were corned beef with sauerkraut, bacon creamed spinach, and lime chiffon pie. The spinach dish and the lime chiffon pie brought a touch of green to the St. Patrick’s Day holiday table.
Here’s to a healthy, happy, and colorful St. Patrick’s Day in 2020!
