Beginning today, WSTT features a new format for 2020. For most Wednesdays in the month, a photo will be highlighted with a caption about the image which will tell why the image is significant to the history of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County. The photos will include people, places, and events from earlier days, much like the images and stories that have appeared on the Winston-Salem Time Traveler website over the last six years.
Some of the images may be unidentified, so if you recognize the people in the photos, please send a message. And, please share the images if you think others might recognize the photos.
The photo shown above is an aerial of the Flamingo Drive-In Theatre, located at 2400 Greensboro Road. The feature presentation when the drive-in opened on August 3, 1949, was “Apartment for Peggy.” The movie starred Jeanne Crain, William Holden, and Edmund Gwenn. The movie was shown in Technicolor, and the admission price was $1.00 per car.
The show started at 7:30, but the box office opened at 6:30. The concessions offered were cheeseburgers, hamburgers, hot dogs, cold drinks, candies, popcorn, ice cream, and cigarettes. The drive-in had a new “talk back” system which enabled movie-goers to order concessions from their cars.
Other short subject films that were shown on opening night were “Miracle in a Cornfield,” and a Tom & Jerry color cartoon titled, “The Bear and the Bean.” There was also the latest Warner Brothers “News.”
