Is it Christmas in September? No, but there was a gift involved with this photograph.
Thanks to a very generous donor, this photograph was recently purchased and donated to the Forsyth County Public Library Photograph Collection.
This photograph shows a float in the Winston-Salem Christmas parade, dated 1951. It was made by Coppedge Studios, and focuses on the Sealtest Dairy Products (Southern Dairies) float. The woman skier on the float is unidentified
The photograph was taken in the 600 block of West Fourth Street. The signs show Carolina Parking Company at the left and Forsyth Amoco Service near the center. These businesses were located at 601 West Fourth Street.
Behind the float, the light building is the back of Centenary Methodist Church. And the building beside the church is Major Cola Bottling Company. Both of these buildings are on 4 1/2 Street.
In 1951, Southern Dairies (office and plant) was located at 111-117 West 2nd Street. The advertisement shown above came from a 1951 Winston-Salem city directory.
