M. Clark Johnson was born on this day in 1889, in Winston-Salem, to Thomas R. and Victoria Johnson.
Clark graduated from the Salem Boys School and from Smithdeal Business College.
He was employed at the Winston-Salem Southbound Railway when he enlisted in military service at Camp Laurel, Maryland in 1918.
During the war, he sailed to to France and was in active service there until the armistice was signed. His unit, Headquarters Company, 66th Engineers, reorganized and formed the 20th Grand Division Transportation Corps. He was sent to St. Florentin, France, and worked in transportation, operating rail and motor lines.
He began his service as a private, then was promoted to corporal, and then sergeant. He died of pneumonia in the military hospital in Tonnerre, France in February, 1919.
