A new drive-in opened on this day in 1950, on the corner of Robinhood and Peace Haven Roads.
At the time of its opening, there were nine other drive-in theatres in the area listed in the entertainment section of the newspaper. The other drive-in theatres were: Winston-Salem Drive-In (North Cherry Street Extension), Walnut Cove (Germanton), Moon-Glo (High Point Road), Pilot (Pilot Mountain), King (Highway 52), Walkertown (Walkertown-Reidsville Road), Flamingo (Greensboro Highway), Skyview (Konnoak Drive), and Starlight (Kernersville).
The opening feature for the theatre was “The Adventures of Robin Hood,” featuring Errol Flynn and Olivia deHavilland. Admission was $1.00 per car. A grill was available that served sandwiches, drinks and hot coffee.
Keeping the cold weather in mind, there were “little inferno” in-car heaters available for the cars, to offer comfort to the movie-goers.
Many people have memories of driving down Robinhood Road, toward Peace Haven, and catching a glimpse of the movie screen.
This area is filled with strip shopping centers and other businesses today.
