The new fairgrounds opened on this day in 1951, at 27th and Cherry Streets.
New structures were built for the fair, including a new grandstand and a cattle show barn.
The city and county schools were closed for half a day for the children to attend the fair.
The dedication took place on October 11th, with Governor Kerr Scott in attendance.
In 2014, the city renamed the fairgrounds the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds, but the fair will still be called the Dixie Classic Fair. The fair had several names over the years, and was named the Dixie Classic Fair in 1956.
