October 4,1947: Winston-Salem Drive-In Opens

The Winston-Salem Drive-In opened on this Saturday evening in 1947.  The first drive-in theatre in Winston-Salem was located on Cherry Street Extension and Indiana Avenue.

The opening feature was “River Boat Rhythm,” starring Leon Errol, Glenn Vernon, Walter Catlett, and Art Kramer.  There were two showings of the movie, at 7 pm and 9 pm.

Admission was $1.00 per car, and the advertisement said “Bring the whole family.”

A new movie was featured on the following Monday and Tuesday evenings, “The Great John L.,” starring Linda Darnell and Greg McClure.  And on the following Thursday evening, Johnny Weissmuller starred in “Tarzan and the Leopard Woman.”

The photo above shows the miniature train at the Winston-Salem Drive-In.  The name on the train is “Fibber’s Streamliner.”

The drive-in closed in 1984.
