Roscoe Lewis Hutchins was born on this day in 1894, in Chapel Hill, to James Lewis and Arrimetta Hogan Hutchins.
He attended schools in Chapel Hill and worked in a drugstore in Chapel Hill. He came to Winston-Salem in 1914 to join his brother, James, who had opened the first Hutchins Drug Store on North Liberty Street.
Roscoe served in the Marine Corps during World War I. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was married to Pauline Brewer Hutchins.
He and his brother operated drug stores in Winston-Salem for nearly 60 years. At one time there were five Hutchins Drug Stores in the city.
Over the years, the number of stores varied, but they were all eventually consolidated in a new building on Cloverdale Avenue. This building was later sold to Revco.
Roscoe passed away in 1974.
