An announcement was made on this day in 1953, that the new chapel on the Wake Forest College campus will be named Wait Chapel. The chapel was named for Samuel Wait, the first president of the college, and a prime figure in organizing the Baptist State Convention.
The first campus, located in Wake Forest, NC, included Wait Hall, which burned and then was rebuilt in 1934.
The announcement also included the naming of Wingate Hall, the three-story education section attached to the chapel. Today, Wingate Hall provides classrooms for the Department of Religion and the School of Divinity. Wingate Hall was enlarged in 1998 to provide additional space for the School of Divinity.
