Dr. Dallas Clearborn Speas was born on this day in 1886, in Forsyth County, to John L. and Lucinda Spainhour Speas.
He graduated from Clemmons High School and the University of North Carolina. He received his medical degree from the University of Maryland, and did postgraduate work at the University of Chicago.
He was married to Eliza Ann Tuttle.
Dr. Speas opened his first office in Bethania in 1911. He opened the first tonsil clinic in Forsyth County in 1929.
He built his home on the corner of Reynolda and Polo Roads in 1938. His office and clinic were in a building attached to his home.
In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Speas served 16 years as a Forsyth County Commissioner. He was chairman for one term, then retired in 1958. However, he did run again in 1960 and 1966, but he was defeated.
Dr. Speas was a supporter of the schools, and was an advocate of the consolidation of city and county schools. He took other stands on issues that were not popular, and he expressed the opinion that this led to his defeat in elections.
He served as assistant and acting Forsyth County coroner. He practiced medicine for nearly 60 years, and passed away in 1970.
