Rufus Arthur Spaugh Sr. was born on this day in 1899, in Winston-Salem, to Rufus A. and Anna Louise Hege Spaugh.
He was educated in the local schools, and graduated from the University of North Carolina.
He began his working career with Arista Mills and Washington Mills. He worked for 43 years with Washington Mills, attaining the position of president in 1951. He retired in 1964.
Arthur served on various textile association boards.
He was very active at Home Moravian Church, and served as a Trustee and a member of the board.
Arthur had a vision for Old Salem, patterned somewhat after Williamsburg. When his vision finally came to fruition, and Old Salem was incorporated, Arthur served on the board of trustees and held several offices with Old Salem Inc.

He was married to Mary Gordon. He passed away in 1990.
