September 11,1919:New Anchor Store Opens

Anchor Store 1919

The ad shown above is only half of the full newspaper page that was devoted to advertising the new Anchor Store that opened on this day in 1919.

Located at 120-122 West Fourth Street, the store occupied a remodeled building formerly known as the Hinshaw Building.  The building was recently used by Myers Brothers Company.

Anchor Store located in Winston-Salem two years ago and the new building was an indication that the store was well-received.

The opening on this day was informal because there was still work to be done on the building and there was still merchandise to display.  The building had two stories above the street, with a daylight basement.  And, the building boasted an elevator that serviced all floors.

The new store contained departments that were not featured in the previous store, such as men’s clothing and furnishings, boy’s clothing and furnishings, millinery, shoes and a basement store.

Judging from the newspaper report on the following day, and the large number of ladies who attended, the open house was a success.
