William O. Gilbert III was born on this day in 1942, in Forsyth County, to William O. and Audrey Yow Gilbert Jr.
He was a graduate of R. J. Reynolds High School and Moravian College. He also attended Moravian Theological Seminary, and served churches in the U. S. Virgin Islands and Alaska. He graduated in 1970, and was ordained in the ministry at Advent Moravian Church.
He married Kathryn Skoglund in 1969. Together they served churches in several states, including Hopewell Moravian Church in Forsyth County.
Rev. Gilbert was active in the Boy Scouts, and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award and the Vigil Honor by the Order of the Arrow.
He also served Elbow Lake Presbyterian Church and the Ashby Presbyterian Church.
He worked as a soccer referee for several years.
He passed away in Minnesota, where he lived, in 2012.
