August 12: Happy Birthday! Annie Moselle Stephenson

Annie Moselle Stephenson was born on this day in 1906, in Milton, to James B. and Cora Le Grand Stephenson.

Moselle moved to Winston-Salem with her family in 1913.  She graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School and Winthrop College.

She began her teaching career as director of female athletics at Forest Park School in 1928.  She was head of the English Department at Gray High School and at Parkland High School.

Miss Stephenson also taught journalism and was an adviser for the yearbook publications at Gray and Parkland.  She received many accolades during her teaching career.  In 1941, the Gray High School seniors dedicated their section of the yearbook to her “for her faithfulness, sincerity, willingness, and friendliness toward all, and her sympathetic nature in helping with our problems.”

She retired from teaching in 1968, after a career of 40 years.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and of the North Carolina English Teachers Association in Winston-Salem.

Moselle passed away in 1972.
