On this day in 1918, Mr. P. H. Hanes Sr. offered to sell to the city a tract of land (40 or 50 acres) that is suitable for a park.
The offer by Mr. Hanes came at a meeting of the Board of Aldermen.
Mr. Hanes describes the potential park land as being west of the city along a creek, and it is easily reached by the streetcar line.
The 47-acre Hanes Park was planned as the sports and recreation area for the western part of Winston-Salem. It was laid out with playing fields, tracks and tennis courts.
The photo shows Hanes Park under construction in the 1920s. The photographer stood on the freshly-graded bank of Reynolds High School and pointed his camera eastward to get the photo.
Only a few houses had been built along West End Boulevard.
