Rev. Dr. Edward Dudley Colhoun Jr. was born on this day in 1927, in Virginia, to Edward and Hallie Fox Colhoun.
He grew up in Roanoke and played football and basketball in high school. He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he attended and graduated from the University of the South in Tennessee, majoring in mathematics and physics. In college, he played and lettered in football, basketball, and tennis.
Dudley married Sarah Hill.
After graduation he attended Virginia Theological Seminary. After graduation, he served churches in Virginia and in Georgia. He was called as rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in 1961, and served for 31 years, until his retirement in 1992.
Rev. Colhoun was instrumental in starting the Summer Enrichment Center at St. Paul’s, Crisis Control Center, Samaritan Ministries, and Hospice of Forsyth County. He was also active in Senior Services and in the Winston-Salem Rotary Club.
He was awarded honorary doctorates from the University of the South and Virginia Theological Seminary.
Rev. Colhoun passed away in 2007. One of the gathering room in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church is named in his memory.
