On this day in 2007, an announcement was made in the Winston-Salem Journal concerning the Special Children’s School.
The announcement said that a motion was approved in the last month that made the Special Children’s School part of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system.
The school was started in 1973, and was originally called Northwest Ministry Developmental Day Services. The school served 22 students, then enlarged to 39 students in 1986, and to 50 students in 1990.
The school currently serves approximately 124 children from birth to five years of age with and without disabilities. Approximately 1/3 of the children are without disabilities.
The school is located at 4505 Shattalon Drive. Funds for the building were raised through a Capital Campaign. Funds from the United Way were used in the past to provide facilities.
The partnership with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System was formed to better serve both children with special needs and typically developing children. It is now considered a public school, and is the only Developmental Day School in Forsyth County.
In 2010, the Special Children’s School and the Children’s Center merged to form The Centers for Exceptional Children.
