On this day in 1911, a contract was let to complete construction at Brown Memorial Baptist Church. A. H. Walls will be the contractor to complete the building, which includes the auditorium, vestibule and the interior of the church.
Mr. Walls is charged with the job of completing the building in time for the State Baptist Convention which is scheduled for December. The convention will be meeting at the church.
Brown Memorial Baptist Church was located on the corner of Spring Street and West Fourth Street. The church was organized in 1889 as Broad Street Baptist Church. The new building was started in 1906, and named in honor of Dr. Henry A. Brown, the long-time minister of First Baptist Church.
Brown Memorial and First Baptist merged in 1935, and occupied the First Baptist Church facilities on West Fifth Street.
The Brown Memorial building was later used by the Greek Orthodox Church.
