George Douglas Boyle was born on this day in 1901, in Rhode Island.
He specialized in hotel food service and was with the Food Allocations Board and the War Food Administration during World War II.
He was the assistant to the chairman of the board of Statler Hotels, Inc. He came to Winston-Salem in 1948 as manager of the Robert E. Lee Hotel.
Under his leadership, the hotel’s dining room and coffee shop became popular eating places. He was a very familiar presence in the dining room and coffee shop, and was in attendance at the many banquets, luncheons, parties and other events held at the hotel.
Douglas served on the hospital commission, and was chairman of the United Fund. He also participated in other civic organizations.
After his retirement in 1964, he moved to West Palm Beach and worked as a hotel consultant. He formed a company to develop the hotel and tourist business in Costa Rica, but became ill before that project came to fruition.
Douglas passed away in 1976.
