Aurelia Plumly was born on this day in 1910, in Pennsylvania, to Charles Edwin and Bess Gray Plumly.
She lived in Winston-Salem for most of her life, and graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School. She received the Montague Medal for having the highest grade point average in her class.
Aurelia graduated from Smith College in 1932. The following year she co-founded Summit School, where she was the business manager, and taught English, physical education and social studies.
Aurelia served in World War II, and was the first WAVE from Winston-Salem. She was promoted from ensign to First Lieutenant.
Aurelia married Ralph Edward Spaugh in 1944.
She was very active in civic and community organizations. She served as Girl Scout Commissioner, and was active in the Junior League, Colonial Dames, Twin City Garden Club, Children’s Theatre, Old Salem, and United Fund. She was also active in activities involving Home Moravian Church.
Aurelia passed away in 1991, just one week after Ralph died.
