On this day in 1970, a heavy rain caused the roof to collapse on the Fries Auditorium at Winston-Salem State University.
The auditorium was built in 1939 and had a seating capacity of 1,000.
It was named in honor of Henry E. Fries, chairman of the board of trustees since the school was founded.
The O’Kelly Library was built at the location of the Fries Auditorium.
The Kenneth R. William Auditorium replaced the Fries Auditorium, in another location.
