On this day in 2006, an article in the Winston-Salem Journal announced that Family Services plans to build a $4 million headquarters on Broad Street near Salem Avenue in the Southeast Gateway. It will be the first building in Forsyth County to be certified green by the U. S. Green Building Council.
The article also announced that the building will be 20,000-square-feet, and the capital campaign began on this day at the Old Salem Visitor Center.
Family Services began the search for a new home in 2003, when its current, rented office space on Coliseum Drive was included in a plan to sell the property. They had rented the space since 1957.
The ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony for the new $3.8 million home for Family Services was held on June 4, 2008. Tours of the first LEED-certified new “green” construction in Forsyth County were offered to visitors. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. The building’s “green” elements included flooring made of cork, electric lighting that automatically adjusts according to incoming light, and adhesives, sealants, paints, coatings, carpets and composite wood with low volatile organic-compound content.
