On this day in 1935, an announcement was made that Brown Memorial Baptist Church (pictured left) and First Baptist Church (pictured right) planned to merge. A vote was taken for the merger, and although the vote was close, the decision was to merge the congregations.
Brown Memorial Baptist Church was located on the corner of West Fourth and Spring Streets. It was named for Rev. Henry A. Brown, a longtime Baptist minister who served at First Baptist Church.
First Baptist Church was originally located on East Second Street, and moved to West Fifth Street in 1925.
At the time of the merger, there was a “walk-0ver” from Brown Memorial to First Baptist. The Brown Memorial Church building was later used for the Greek Orthodox Church.
