May 2,1916: Granville Place Lots for Sale

XX.00364.1

An announcement appeared in the Winston-Salem Journal on this date in 1916 that lots in Granville Place are now on sale.  It was touted as a beautiful development, with city conveniences, splendid streets, a graded school, fine views, low prices and easy terms.  Several real estate dealers were handling sales of the lots, including E. H. Stockton, treasurer of Salem Congregation.

The ad included a map of the new development, which was surveyed and platted by J. L. Ludlow and J. O. Craig of Winston-Salem.  The development was also referred to as the “Christ Church woods.”

The map showed 29 sections of lots, located on both sides of Granville Drive.  One highlight of the new development was the new Granville School, and Granville Park near the center of the neighborhood, plus Christ Moravian Church on Academy Street.

Some of the streets in the development were Bank, Academy, Herman, Montgomery, Churton, Hutton, Holland, Shober, Shuman, Gammon, Walnut, Washington, West, Green, and Laurel.

Bishop Rondthaler reported in his 1915 Memorabilia that several homes were being built in the new Granville Place development, and his 1916 Memorabilia mentioned that a new road and bridge were being built for access to the development.
