As the tobacco business grew, so did the need for a larger office force for R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company.
Winston’s City Hall was located on the corner of Main and Fourth Street. When a new City Hall was built at Main and First Street, the former City Hall building and the property were sold at auction in 1927.Home Real Estate Company purchased the property, along with adjoining lots, for R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company to build a new office.
Shreve and Lamb of New York were the architects chosen for the new building.
On this day in 1929, the office force moved from its previous location at Main and Fifth, just one block away, but to quite a different environment.
The 22-story Reynolds Building also leased space over the years to a variety of businesses, such as insurance and brokerage firms, attorneys, architects, developers, rail line offices, barber and shoe shine shop, optometrists, and Bobbitt’s Pharmacy.
A few years ago the office personnel for R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company moved to the adjoining Plaza Building, and today the Reynolds Building awaits a buyer.
