April 21: Happy Birthday! Dr. Rev. David H. Burr

Reverend Dr. David H. Burr was born on this day in 1921, in Pennsylvania.  He was educated in Wisconsin, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin and from Princeton Theological Seminary.  He received the Doctor of Divinity degree from Davidson College, and received an additional degree from St. Andrews College.

Dr. Burr served with the United States Coast Guard during World War II.

He was staff chaplain at Princeton University during his seminary years.  He served the churches of First Presbyterian, Charlottesville, Virginia, and Royster Memorial Presbyterian in Norfolk, Virginia.

He became pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem in 1963, and served this church until he retired in 1986, when he was named Pastor Emeritus.

During his years of service in Winston-Salem, Dr. Burr was active in many organizations, such as the Winston-Salem Housing Authority, Winston-Salem Rotary Club, Winston-Salem TORCH Club, United Way, Brenner Children’s Hospital, and WFDD.  He was involved in the creation of Crisis Control, Downtown Church Ministry, CONTACT, Family Action Council, and Forsyth Prison Ministry.

Rev. Dr. Burr passed away in 2011.
