Madison Doughty Stockton was born in Kernersville on this day in 1861, and was the son of John and Martha Stockton.
He moved to Winston with his family in 1869 and went to school there at Winston Academy. He worked first as a bookkeeper in the office of the register of deeds. Later, he worked in the office of P. H. Hanes Tobacco Company. Then, he went to work for the tobacco firm of T. L. Vaughn as bookkeeper, and later became a partner in the firm.
In 1900 Madison became president and treasurer of the firm of Huntley-Hill-Stockton, a retail furniture company. Then, in 1906, he helped organize the B. F. Huntley Furniture Company for the manufacture of furniture. He was secretary and treasurer of this company. He retired from the furniture businesses about 1930.
Stockton was active in many organizations, such as the YMCA, Greensboro College, West End Methodist Episcopal Church, and the Children’s Home. And, he served on the Board of Aldermen for four years.
In January 1935, at the annual meeting of stockholders, the Morris Plan Bank issued a resolution honoring the service of M. D. Stockton. The president of the bank, J. R. Fain, announced that the bank had a very good year in 1934. He also recognized the service of M. D. Stockton, who had been associated with the bank as a director since its organization in 1917. Stockton was reelected as a director for 1935.
Madison Stockton passed away in 1945.
