Eva Almira Wall was born in Forsyth County in 1890. She graduated from the Forsyth County schools and Salem College.
She worked for the City of Winston-Salem as an auditor, a trouble-shooter for City Hall, and supervisor of the city’s finances. She also worked for the school system, handling school finances. In all, she worked in these positions for 39 years.
After she retired from her work with the city, she became a sales representative for the North American Assurance Society of Richmond. She worked for this organization until her death in 1971.
Eva helped organize the Altrusa Club of Winston-Salem in 1924, and served as the club’s first president. The club was made up of executive and professional women, and was not well-received when it was first organized. Over the years, the club was involved in many community projects. The first project for the club was a night school for boys and girls who couldn’t read or write. Most of the young people had come here from the mountains to work. With the help of former teachers, they set up 4 schools and taught 50 young people to read and write.
