Admiral Richard E. Byrd, in uniform at right, the famous Antarctic explorer, visited Winston-Salem on this date in 1936, and posed for pictures with Klondike Iceberg (the bull). Klondike Iceberg was owned by Thurmond Chatham (at left), and was born to Klondike Nira in the Antarctic.
This was Admiral Byrd’s third trip to Winston-Salem, and he came to discuss his experiences and to show his moving pictures at Reynolds Auditorium.
Thurmond Chatham furnished a cow and blankets for Byrd’s polar expedition.
