The new $40 million headquarters building for R. J. Reynolds Industries was dedicated on this date in 1978. The building was made of reflective glass and stood five-stories tall. Operations for RJR’s tobacco, energy, containerized shipping, foods, beverages, aluminum products, and packaging divisions were directed from this building atop Reynolds Boulevard hill.
North Carolina Governor James B. Hunt was present for the dedication, as was Commerce Secretary Juanita M. Kreps, who spoke at the event.
Just a few miles away on this day, President Jimmy Carter spoke at Wake Forest University, giving a major foreign policy and defense speech.
