The announcement in the Winston-Salem Journal on this date in 1928 proclaimed plans for a new six-story building for Gilmers, Inc., to be built on the corner of West Fourth and Liberty Streets.
The newspaper article said that the buildings that occupied the property were being removed, and the remainder of the debris should be cleared by the end of the week.
The announcement contained a bit of mystery because although the new store would be owned and operated by Gilmers, Inc, it would have a different name, and the name would be announced later.
A new store did open in the new building in October 1928, and it was called the Davis-McCollum Company. Another business to occupy the building, which was also called the Van Dyke Building, was the Huntley-Hill-Stockton Furniture Company in 1939.
Today we know this building as the Pepper Building, and it is shown in the center of the above photo.
