The first Maryland Fried Chicken opened at the foot of Summit Street hill in 1969. The franchise was owned by Mr. and Mrs. John Eckert, who moved from Macon, Georgia. Other Maryland Fried Chicken restaurants were planned for the city.
The restaurant served shrimp and fish in addition to the fried chicken, and had 20 inside seats and a drive-up window.
Today, Alex’s Cafe is located in this building.

It was also a Kentucky Fried Chicken in the 70s and possibly part of the 80s. My brother and I used to love going there to eat because we knew we’d get one of the sundaes they used to sell, for dessert.
