Lucy Reynolds Critz was born in Patrick County, Virginia in 1858. She was the daughter of Hardin W. and Nancy Cox Reynolds, and the sister of Richard Joshua Reynolds and William Neal Reynolds.
Lucy’s father was a tobacco planter, and her brothers came to Winston and formed a partnership that established the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company.
Lucy came to Salem to attend Salem Academy, and stayed about a year. Then she went to Sullins College in Tennessee. Ruby married Robert Critz, also a tobacco man, and they lived in Winston-Salem on Spring Street. She and Robert had four daughters and one son who lived to adulthood.
Lucy particularly liked to knit, even as she advanced in age. She provided all of her grandchildren with knitted socks. She also loved flowers and playing a card game called Setback.
When Lucy passed away in 1953 at age 95, she was the last of her generation.
