An architect’s drawing of the proposed Twin Castles Apartments appeared in the Winston-Salem Journal on this day in 1938. The apartments were billed as the Southeast’s largest apartment project.
The proposal was to build three buildings to accommodate 124 families, and they would be built on Beach Street Extension in the Ardmore neighborhood.
The apartments were built in 1938, and they featured large rooms, with cross ventilation for cooling and a new style of radiators for heating. Tiled bathrooms, large closets in the bedrooms, and compact but well-equipped kitchens offered all the amenities to prospective renters, including outdoor sandboxes for children.
