Walter Thomason was born in 1875 in Lincoln County and received his elementary education in Lincolnton. He taught school for a while, then entered UNC, from which he graduated in 1898.
Walter taught school and ran a private school with his brother at Concord. He became superintendent of the Concord grade school system, and later became the first superintendent of the Stonewall Jackson training school.
He came to Winston-Salem in 1914 to be superintendent of the Methodist Children’s Home. Under his leadership, many of the wooden buildings that were on the property originally were replaced by new buildings.
He was elected to serve on the Board of Aldermen, but illness forced his resignation and he died in 1921 the age of 46.
