On this date: January 14, 1906. The Winston-Salem Humane Society was organized at the YMCA. The officers were: J. M. Rogers, president; P. M. Colbert, secretary; and the Executive Committee was comprised of P. H. Hanes, R. I. Dalton, and D. S. Reid.
This was a prelimary organization, with the understanding that a permanent organization would be formed later. At the meeting, approximately 40 people were enrolled as members.
The object of the society was to aid in enforcing the law regarding cruelty to animals, for which there was a pressing need in the community.
