On this date: January 9, 1923. Winston High School, also called City High School and Cherry Street High School, was located on North Cherry Street between First Presbyterian Church and the YMCA.
The school opened in 1908, but more space was needed for the growing population. A new high school was already under construction on Hawthorne Road, scheduled to open for students in the fall of 1923.
But a fire in the evening of January 9, 1923, damaged the building so that students could not attend the school. Temporary classrooms were set up in the downtown area, until the new school, R. J. Reynolds High School, could be made suitable for students nine months earlier than planned.
