July 30,1968: Ronald Reagan Comes to Winston-Salem

On this day in 1968, Governor Ronald Reagan came to Winston-Salem and spoke at the Memorial Coliseum.

At the time of his visit, Reagan was an unannounced Republican presidential candidate.

Reagan arrived at Smith Reynolds Airport (shown in the photo) and attended a $100-a-plate dinner at the Statler-Hilton Inn.

Arthur Smith’s band played at the Memorial Coliseum before the rally featuring Ronald Reagan and Representative James Gardner.
