February 14, 1969: Thruway Theatre Time Capsule

Thruway Time Capsule

The new Thruway Movie Theatre had a special feature that was visible to everyone who visited the theatre.  On the sidewalk in front of the theatre was a plaque that announced a time capsule that was to be opened in 50 years, in 2019.

The Thruway Theatre has been replaced by a variety of businesses, such as the Hand and Stone Spa, but the time capsule remains embedded in the sidewalk.  In 2014, the year 2019 doesn’t sound quite so far away…it’s just around the corner, and then everyone will know what was important enough to to be included in the time capsule in 1969.

Thruway theatre was a big part of my childhood in the early 70’s my mom would buy movie tickets at a discount from my school Griffith Elem for the summer.

My mother Jerrel Bell was asked to write a letter of what she thought it would be like in 50 years . Her letter is in that time capsule. I just found out they’re going to open the Time Capsule February 16th on a Saturday but have not decided on a time . my mother is still alive and we will all be there for the opening

I stood in line many times for the theatre, atop that time capsule. As a child, I thought it was about the size and shape of one of the Apollo space capsules – big enough for 3 astronauts. Nope.
